Mammy Walsh S A Z Of The Walsh Family by Marian Keyes

Original Title: Mammy Walsh S A Z Of The Walsh Family

For all fans eagerly awaiting Marian Keyes' new novel The Woman Who Stole my Life - here is a laugh-out-loud ebook-only short guide to everyone's favourite dysfunctional Irish family, Mammy Walsh's A-Z of the Walshes. It does exactly what it says on the tin but here's a brief word from its author, Mammy Walsh herself: 'There's this woman I know from bridge, Mona Hopkins, a lovely woman she is, even if I must admit I'm not that keen on her myself, and she said a great thing the other day. I was expecting her to say "Two no trumps," but instead she comes out with a saying about her children. She says, "Boys wreck your house and girls wreck your head." Isn't that a marvellous bit of wisdom - "Boys wreck your house and girls wreck your head!" And God knows it's the truest thing I've heard in a long time. I should know. I have five girls. Five daughters. And let me tell you, my head is wrecked from them. Although, now that I think of it, so is my house . . .' It's the perfect re-introduction to the Walsh family, featured in Marian's bestselling novels about the Walsh sisters, Watermelon, Rachel's Holiday, Angels, Anybody Out There and her latest novel, The Mystery of Mercy Close . Praise for Marian Keyes: 'When it comes to writing page-turners that put a smile on your face and make you think, Keyes is in a class of her own' Daily Express 'Zips along with engaging characters, fabulous plotting and spot-on dialogue. Marian Keyes: what a genius' Daily Mail Marian Keyes' international bestselling novels include Rachel's Holiday, Last Chance Saloon, Sushi for Beginners, Angels, The Other Side of the Story, Anybody Out There, This Charming Man and The Brightest Star in the Sky. Desire in the broadest sense, as a form of generous self-assertion should ideally increase with the passage of time as we gradually acquire deeper insight into ourselves and others. Prescriptive cultural stereotypes, however, put obstacles on our path to progress as individuation. Yet growing older should not entail renunciation of the singularity of personal fulfilment. This volume is a collection of literary testimonies to the power of art to challenge and resist the social constraints on desire in the context of aging. In the essays, men and women claim their right to age in desire and imaginative vigour.

'When people ask me what I do for a crust and I tell them that I'm a novelist, they immediately assume that my life is a non-stop carousel of limos, television appearances hair-dos, devoted fans, stalkers and all the glitzy paraphernalia of being a public figure. It's time to set the record straight. I write alone, in a darkened bedroom, wearing my PJs, eating bananas, my laptop on a pillow in front of me ...' Family Of Freedom by Kenneth T. Walsh

Original Title: Family Of Freedom

Barack Obama is the first African American President, but the history of African Americans in the White House long predates him. The building was built by slaves, and African Americans have worked in it ever since, from servants to advisors. In charting the history of African Americans in the White House, Kenneth T. Walsh illuminates the trajectory of racial progress in the US. He looks at Abraham Lincoln and his black seamstress and valet, debates between President Johnson and Martin Luther King over civil rights, and the role of black staff members under Nixon and Reagan. Family of Freedom gives a unique view of US history as seen through the experiences of African Americans in the White House.

Outing The Senator by David O'Toole

Original Title: Outing The Senator

With the arrival of British secret agent Intrepid on American shores, a secret apparatus began spying on political leaders. Winston Churchill had sent Intrepid to the United States with one mission: drag America into WW II as quickly as possible. Sir William Stephenson began 'tail' operations to blackmail members of Capitol Hill and the executive branch who did not openly support Britain's aims and desires. The anti-war movement in the United States was destroyed even though it was rooted on Main Street, and replaced by the bonfires of belligerence. Political leaders who were previously anti-war abruptly changed their postions after an editorial assault from local newspapers, or surreptitious activities of false propaganda organs run by the British Secret Service. FDR used his friendships in the press to destroy the opposition to the Lend-Lease program by any means necessary, including illegal wiretaps, break-ins Watergate style, and outright blackmail using government funds. FDR knowingly used Department of Agriculture funds to finance the William Allen White Committee, which proved to be a British front. William Allen White himself resigned from the group in disgust. FDR's affair with New York Post owner Dorothy Schiff is documented in great detail, and her role in the Nazi Spy Nest Case is revealed for the first time. Schiff destroyed her lover's chief nemesis, United States Senator David Walsh, the very liberal anti-war leader who opposed FDR's Lend_Lease policies. Even American icon Charles Lindbergh could not stand up to a withering smear campaign. While Walsh was 'outed' as a homosexual caught in a Nazi brothel, the author proves conclusively that the case was a complete fiction, a media creation of the New York Post.

Role Of New York In Marian Keyes Anybody Out There by Anne Barthel

Original Title: Role Of New York In Marian Keyes Anybody Out There

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Rostock, language: English, abstract: The topic of this paper is the function New York takes in the plot of the novel "Anybody out there" by Marian Keyes. There are many books and novels about New York itself. However, there seems to be a lack of analyses that focus on the question in how far New York can function as a plot driving moment in novels where it is only used as a setting background rather than as a topic itself. The question how the setting influences the plot is a classical one in literary theory and literary criticism: "The author chooses the setting carefully to support the action, characters and narrative perspective" (Klarer 2007). This statement shows that usually there is the suspect that the setting is not chosen by random but that it was decided for and depicted in such way as to bring across the plot in a most effective way. Some scientists go even further and claim that a full account for the understanding of a text taking place in New York is only possible if the reader knows the place of the setting by heart...However, this is usually not possible. Therefore there are many works in cultural studies that conduct research on how cities as New York are represented in literary texts. These findings can then be referred to. Nevertheless the question of city representation has not been often enough combined with the question how the representation of New York influences the plot, especially if it comes to literary texts that are not belonging to the classical canon. Since New York seems to be one of the most interesting towns on earth for many people, it is not surprising that it is also a common setting for many novels, especially in modern 21st century ones. This is also the case in "Anybody out there." In this Novel it sometimes seems that New York, the chosen setting
