As The Matzo Ball Turns by Jozef Rothstein

Original Title: As The Matzo Ball Turns

This zany yet telling adventure of a starry-eyed fish out of water landing in Hollywood to pursue a career on the silver screen is filled with surprises the whole way through. An awestruck Jozef Rothstein initially searches for meaningful employment until he lands his first waiting gig in a fast-paced twenty-four-hour deli that caters to the entertainment industry by day and the LA party scene by night. As Rothstein begins the submission process and implements his strategy of “making it” in show business, his plan almost immediately blows up in his face. But not without providing a firsthand look at what the typical actor off the street goes through in order to climb the Hollywood ladder. Jozef is initiated as a trainee at the deli but is quickly jarred into his new reality of professional whipping boy. His world is clearly brought into view as we are introduced to the dysfunctional environment Jozef will spend the next ten years trying to squeeze a decent standard of living out of while shooting for his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. An unusual cast of characters surrounds Jozef in his new occupation and sets the stage for the type of ride we are in for. Celebrity encounters alone make this a journey worth taking as Rothstein has an uncanny ability to humanize these larger-than-life superstars and, when needed, knock them down to size. These chance meetings transpire throughout his adventure, and you never know who you are going to run into next. And while these sightings are enjoyable, Rothstein’s steady descent into LA’s underbelly prevents this story from becoming a Hollywood fluff piece. Featured are members of the adult entertainment business, the gay and lesbian alliance, and performers from a local drag queen bar. When it comes to whacked-out customers, Rothstein saves his best for last. The matzo ball keeps turning throughout this well-written dramedy all the way up until its touching conclusion. New characters and events breathe fresh life into this story all the way through. If you’ve ever dreamed of a career on the big screen, this story will remind you of the challenges we all face as we search, struggle, and hope for something better.

The Matzo Ball Heiress by Laurie Gwen Shapiro

Original Title: The Matzo Ball Heiress

Q: How does Heather Greenblotz, the thirty-one-year-old heiress to the world's leading matzo company, celebrate Passover? A: Alone. In her Manhattan apartment. With an extremely unkosher ham-and-cheese panini. But this year will be different. The Food Channel has asked to film the famous Greenblotz Matzo family's seder, and the publicity op is too good to, ahem, pass over. Heather is being courted by the handsome director and the subtly sexy cameraman, and she's got family coming out of her ears. It's enough to make a formerly dateless heiress feel like a princess. After she casts an ancient shopkeeper as Grandma and coaxes her bisexual father to make an appearance, Heather thinks she's pulled it off. Until her mother stages an unexpected walk-on. As the live broadcast threatens to become a Greenblotz family exposé, Heather must dig deep to find faith in love, family and, most of all, herself.

Just One Year by Gayle Forman

Original Title: Just One Year

The compelling companion title to the much-lauded Just One Day follows Willem's transformative journey toward self-discovery and true love, by the author of If I Stay. Picking up where Just One Day ended, Just One Year tells Willem's side of the story. After spending an amazing day and night with Allyson in Paris that ends in separation, Willem and Allyson are both searching for one another. His story of their year of quiet longing and near misses is a perfect counterpoint to Allyson’s own as Willem undergoes a transformative journey, questioning his path, finding love, and ultimately, redefining himself. * “The complexity of Willem’s character, the twisting plot, and far-flung settings (including the Netherlands, Mexico, and India) create an alluring story that pushes beyond the realm of star-crossed romance.”— Publishers Weekly starred review “As much a travelogue as it is a romance, this novel will appeal to fans of the movie Before Sunrise or Maureen Johnson's 13 Little Blue Envelopes (HarperCollins, 2005).”—School Library Journal “As [Willem] becomes engaged personally and professionally, readers will find their interest quickening, right up to the satisfying denouement.”—Kirkus Reviews
